The Capital Courier -
Within weeks the Supreme Judicial Court is expected to rule on the issue of pay equity. The case in question specifically deals with pay discrimination based on gender. The case is very similar to the Ledbetter case heard by the Supreme Court of the United States in 2007. At question is whether employees can sue their employers for pay discrimination after the statute of limitations has been exhausted.
The broader issue revolves around the question of what role the government should play in the crusade of gender equality when it comes to compensation. Should government become involved in this discrimination issue or is this something that should be corrected by the market place? Furthermore, will allowing employees to sue for pay discrimination open a Pandora's box of lawsuits that will further cripple the struggling economy? It is surely an economic and civil rights debate that will continue for some time.

Team PAPI fully disagrees with any type of discrimination in the work place, whether it is based on gender, race, or sexual orientaion. We agree that laws should be set forth in order to protect any minority from any form of discrimination. Without rules the market place is free to run wild. This will not further cripple the economy if Team PAPI can successfully bring the F.S. out of this economic crisis we are facing. In order to do so, we wil have to delay further actions in the area of pay discrimination in order to focus on the main problem at hand, which is our failing economy. After we stabilize the economy is when we will introduce new legislation based on pay discrimination.
Without further information on the subject or case at matter, we cannot take sides. Though the statute of limitations has been exhausted. For a more specific response we ask:
-How long has the statute of limitations been exhausted?
-Was the plaintiff as qualified as those who were paid more?
-What is the company's reasoning behind such discrimination?
-Why did the plaintiff wait so long to file a lawsuit?
All in all, the thing to keep in mind is, no one knows for sure what effect this will have on our government or economy, we can only use our best judgement.
The MP believes that all peope should be treated equal. The workplace is no different. All people were created equal and the MP believes this philosophy should be held to all walks of life not just in the workplace. The MP supports equal pay for women, men, and minorities. Discrimination issues have not advanced quick enough in this era, and legislation will be passed with the MP to get equal pay for equal work.
